Counselling Children & Young People

Staffordshire and the surrounding area

I offer Counselling to children from the age of 11 years onwards and use an Integrative approach. This combines different theories, adapted to meet the needs of each Child and Young Person.

Children and Young People are no different from adults. They need time and a neutral, non-judgemental, confidential space to explore difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences. This helps them to develop healthy coping skills, confidence, resilience, self-esteem and a sense of self-worth.

Counselling Young Children

Counselling can help young children recognise and understand the feelings they are experiencing and the emotions associated with those feelings. Anger, sadness and worry are typical examples. Counselling can help them to regulate these emotions. With younger children, I use play activities, such as drawing, painting and reading stories to help them to explore and recognise their thoughts and feelings. This enables them to use metaphor to describe their experiences and emotions. Children often feel enormous relief at this process. They feel genuinely uplifted by the sense of being understood.

Counselling Teenagers

Counselling can help teenagers become more aware of how life’s situations, reactions and thinking patterns affect their emotions. Teenagers often find themselves dealing with more complex and challenging emotional and social issues. Counselling can help them to become more aware and accepting of what they’re going through. They will learn how to replace unhelpful thinking patterns – excessively negative, unrealistic or critical thoughts – with more realistic, practical and helpful ones.

Counselling can help with these issues

• Anger or emotional outbursts
• Anxiety or Worry
• Bullying
• Depression or Sadness
• Difficult Behaviour
• Friendship Issues
• Grief or Loss

• Low self esteem
• Negative, Perfectionistic or Self-Critical Thinking
• Sadness or depression
• Sibling rivalry or conflict

Counselling can help Children and Young People understand their thoughts, feelings and behaviour. They become more empowered and motivated to make the necessary changes to reach their potential. Counselling also gives them invaluable skills for their future.

"Nirmal helped me a lot with liking myself more. She allowed me to talk about my feelings and focussed on how I felt instead of other people's feelings"
